VG United at the A. O. Shirley Grounds with the Super Series Cup
VG United brought the BVI Football Association season to a close by 3-peating as President’s Cup champions on Sunday night in Virgin Gorda, in the first time that the championship had been held there, with a 4-1 victory over former champs Wolues.
VG United used four different players scoring four first half goals of the victory. Jaadon Quashie gave VG United the early lead in the 18th minute of play and Kijuan Nimblett made it 2-0 in the 33rd. A penalty kick by Jaden Abrams in the 42nd extended their lead to 3-0, before Decoi Prince capped the 4-0 scoring two minutes into first half stoppage time.
The Wolues finally got on the board in the 81st minute on a goal from Alejandro Sanchez. They lost Abner Villanueva to a red card on “serious foul play” according to the BVIFA match report, in the closing stages of the game.
“I knew for sure it would have been a good game. We started off well with our game plan and our players really stuck to the game plan as they wanted to see us through with having a good end to the season,” VG United manager Jermaine Abrams told Island Sun Sports. “We had a really rough start to the season, caught ourselves in the middle, we didn’t get everything we wanted for the season, but it was the last game of the season and we wanted to retain that title. The team really bought into the plan and the system that we had and we did it. It was a flawless first half for us.”
Abrams said that ‘it feels really good’ to have 3-peated and the ‘boys were excited.’ “What a high to have and go out and represent our club on an international stage, after repeating the President’s Cup, three times in a row,” he said. “At the end of the game I was looking at our stats, a bad game, then a five-game winning streak, then a loss, a draw, then a five game winning streak, so I was a roller coaster but it was good to have the players in place to come back and make a run from a bad start.”
Wolues Coach Levi James said that they did ‘well enough’ to get sufficient players to face VG United, while one player pulled out because he hadn’t recovered from an injury and said that they started off ‘fairly alright.’
“It was one of those where we knew we had to weather the early storm and then hit back,” James said. “They scored off a corner and shoulders dropped a little bit, then scored again and again and it was just halftime and it was like we can’t let this game get away from us and we made one change at halftime and we were able to come up with a lot more intensity. Both teams had chances and we scored one goal in the second half and that’s just how the game ended.”
