Jason “Mad” Fonseca, was a major contributor to VG Heat victories

After building an 11-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning, VG Heat  survived the 5-run bottom of the fifth inning onslaught by Storm, for an 11-9 victory to complete a Virgin Islands Softball Baseball Association double header sweep on Sunday at the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park, after a 2-run victory over Aces. It was Storm’s second weekend defeat.

Despite being out-hit 11-7 by Storm, VG Heat’s pitcher Jason “Mad” Fonseca did enough to keep them in the game, after pitching them through a 12-10 victory over Aces in the first game. Aubrey “Kong” Frett, who was relieved by Allen “Woodrow” Smith, took the loss for Storm.

Right fielder Ramos Hatchett went 3-for-4  with four runs scored and led the VG Heat with 3 RBI’s. Paul Bridgewater was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Trent Herbert, Arthur Titley, and Jaimi Potter each collected two hits for Storm, with Herbert driving in two runs for Storm, who were coming off a 13-12 loss to the Pirates.

VG Heat fended off Aces, 12-10 in the first game, again despite being out hit, 14-7. VG Heat, who scored in every inning except the third, held Aces scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, after a 4-run fourth inning rally. Ron Hatchett with 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and Josh Ridgeway had a 2-for-4 game with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. Juan Soriano went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and drove in two.

Aces’ Kjae Thompson, who scored one of two runs in the bottom of the first on an inside the park home run, had a 3-for-4 game with four runs batted in.

VG Heat Shortstop Josh Ridgeway, told Island Sun Sports that the game was between teams battling for playoff spots. “In the first game, we got quality pitching from Mad  Fonseca and timely hitting and it was a close game which we won by a couple runs,” he noted. “In the second game, Mad started our game—he’s a workhorse for us all year and all last season. He dug deep and got us to a point. Redz (Erwin Telemaque) came in and cleaned up the rest of it. Again, it came down to that timely hitting. Our defence just needs to continue to improve, that’s kinda our Achilles heel at the moment.”

Smith said his team isn’t gelling, complaining about practicing and they’re trying to mix and match. “It hasn’t worked out as yet,” he said. “The truth is, we aren’t that good. When you could get an out, you need to get an out. You have to make basic plays. You’ve got to help your pitchers. That’s just it. Basic, basic ball.”
