Derrol Redhead shatched two wickets from two balls vs Dominica
Akin Mousey Hendrickson hit the third century of the league and Derrol Redhead snatched two wickets off three balls to derail Dominica’s charge, helping Grenada to a tense 34 run victory, while Jamaica had a three wicket win over the BVI in the resumption of the BVICA T30 Nations League on Sunday in Greenland, after an August Festival break.
Hendrickson and Redhead used a 110 fourth wicket partnership to revive the innings from 43 for 3, before Redhead was bowled by Elicius Phillip for a supporting 53, laying the foundation for Grenada’s 278 for 9 in in 22.1 overs. It was Redhead’s second half century of the league where he has scored 145 runs, good for No 5 on the scoring chart.
Hendrickson—who hit his first century—lashed Dominica’s bowlers for 128 not out from 56 balls to take the league lead with 208 runs scored, off a knock that included 15 fours and seven sixes.
Chabilall Itwaru, who bagged 4 for 59 and moved into second place with eight among bowlers, began by removing Grenada openers Ragel Noel and Rodney Marryshow, for 14 and 21 runs respectively, before Hendrickson began stabilizing the innings with Redhead.
Gary Prince, who took 3 for 66, opened Dominica’s innings with a sure handed 71, before being bowled by Redhead, setting the pace for their drive towards 245 for 7 in 21.4 overs. Needing 48 from 12 balls, Redhead repelled Dominica’s charge when he disrupted a 78 run partnership between Marvin Robinson and Bodean Samuel, ending Robinson’s day on 47. Itwaru, who shared a 66 run partnership with Robinson, and Samuel, each contributed 45. Redhead grabbed 3 for 35 and Noel, 2 for 60.
“Today we fell short because we came out shorthanded with eight players and again, we keep struggling for players, some of our guys from the USVI didn’t show up to this tournament on a whole and some of our local guys weren’t here because of work and family matters,” Robinson told Island Sun Sports. “That’s the reason why we lost. We put up a good fight, and what that says is, if we come out with a full 11 on any given day, there’s no team around here in any tournament, to test us—we can be dangerous. I got out trying to hit Redhead too hard. I wasn’t studying my score at the time. I was just trying to get the victory and fell short of 50 with 47. I was more focused in the last 1.3 overs to really bring the game home.”
Grenada Captain Jason Thomas said it was a great victory for this team that improved to 2-1 while Dominica fell to 0-3. “They put up a good fight after opening with an 87-run partnership so we were under pressure as we fell behind,” Thomas said. “But the thinking was getting the right bowler in the right spot and Redhead did a great job. He batted and bowled good. First time I’ve seen him bowled like this throughout the whole tournament or even watching him play in the BVI.”
During the morning game, Jamaica middle order batsman Trevis Dookaram used a 108 run partnership with Jerome Morris, to take the game away from the BVI, after they were 57 for 4, to win by three wickets. Dookaram had 82 to climb into seventh place in runs scored with 132, before becoming one a Jagnarine “Suga” Persaud’s 3 for 36 haul, putting him into a three way tie with six wickets. Morris has a supporting 28 and Wayne Archer, 23, as Jamaica replied with 174 for 7 in 19.1 overs, chasing down the BVI’s score of 173 from 19.3 overs.
BVI bowlers Dennis Tyson and Neil Hayes, had 2 for 29 and 2 for 51 respectively.
Jamaica made an early inroad into the BVI’s lineup taking 3 for 30, before Captain Vishal Bharat and James Ramprashad had a 63-run fifth wicket partnership, but the other batsmen couldn’t stay in the crease long enough to build partnerships. Jamaica bowlers Alando Givans, 3 for 30 and Kelvin Lewis, 3 for 45, grabbed timely wickets avoiding the BVI from gaining momentum.
